Fees are always an important concern when a family is already economically stressed by a transition to two households. Colombo & Heavey, P.C., L.L.O., will provide you with numerous suggestions to control these costs.
This topic will be discussed during your initial consultation. A deposit will be requested if you choose our firm to represent you in your case. We have found that making regular monthly payments to your account which will be applied to your deposit will help you avoid having a substantial and burdensome legal bill at the conclusion of your case. Each month, you will receive an itemized statement regarding the work done and the hourly rate for services rendered by each of the professionals in our firm. The statement will itemize the dates the services were performed, the nature of the services, payments made, and charges incurred.
At Colombo & Heavey, we try to reduce the anxiety about the costs of legal services by educating clients about the nature of the process, the necessary professional services anticipated, and the likely costs. Please contact us if you have any concerns about your account.

While it is impossible to predict how much your legal fees will be, the following are some suggestions to help you keep your costs down, your stress reduced, your divorce on track and your children out of the middle.
- Don't argue - It can be hard not to get caught up in the old "button-pushing" behavior with your spouse. You can bet that if it was not productive during the mariage, it will not be productive during the divorce. The best idea is to focus on the end goal and keep all arguments off the table.
- Set goals - Decide what you want to come out of the divorce with and let us know. Be honest and make sure your expectations regarding these goals are realistic.
- Find a good support system - This is a very hard time in your life. A close friend and/or therapist can be vital during this process. While we do care about your feelings, we are more concerned about the facts in your case. A friend, therapist, clergy or support group is better suited to help you with the emotional issues brought on by this process. It is also a lot cheaper!
- Consider mediation - Often, the parties can meet with a mediator to discus and resolve many of the issues. Somtimes, a meeting with both attorneys and both parties is possible with a mediator to negotiate a property settlement. It will just depend upon the parties, the issues and the attorneys.
